TLMODA is saddened by the passing of long time member and recipient of the TLMODA Founders Award, J. Michael Chargois.

J. Michael Chargois, was a native of Houston who began his automotive career at Frank Gillman Pontiac-GMC-Honda in 1970 as a salesperson. After six years with the Gillman organization, he joined David Taylor Cadillac, where he cultivated and refined the leadership and management skills that have propelled him to success as an automotive dealer and entrepreneur.

A dealer for over twenty-five years, he owned and operated numerous dealerships, including Lincoln-Mercury dealerships in Austin, Houston, and Memphis; Pavilion Mitsubishi in Austin, and San Marcos Toyota in San Marcos, Texas, which he owned until 2020. Never one to rest on his laurels, J. Michael Chargois also operates a reputable body shop in Austin, as well as a state-of-the-art car wash and make ready facility in San Marcos. A highly regarded member of his community, his willingness to mentor the many men and women who look to him for advice and guidance is well-known.

Over the years, he has also made his mark on the automobile industry in various capacities—serving two terms on the Lincoln-Mercury Dealer Council and as chairman and vice-chairman of the South Texas Lincoln Mercury Dealers Association, serving on the Houston Metro Board, holding a seat on the Austin Automobile Dealers Association Board, serving on the Brand Communication Advisory Board, and holding a seat on the Texas Automobile Dealers Association Board of Directors. Additionally, he has trained three dealer candidates and two secretary-treasurer candidates for Ford Motor Company.

We will remember J. Michael Chargois as a true pioneer of the automobile industry as a whole, a longtime member and staunch advocate and supporter of TLMODA, and a successful minority dealer.
